The award was created by NAMI MC in honor of a NAMI MC Advisory Panel member; eminent psychiatrist and deputy director for clinical affairs at the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Wayne Fenton, who was slain in 2006 while providing an urgent consultation to a 19-year-old patient. Dr. Fenton’s research and clinical work was devoted to treating individuals with serious mental illnesses and ensuring that these individuals received adequate care.
The Fenton Memorial Award will be presented to a member of the mental health community who best exemplifies the commitment to serving individuals diagnosed with mental illness that was the hallmark of Dr. Fenton’s career. The award recipient will be selected by the NAMI MC Board of Directors, from nominations provided by the mental health community, including service providers, consumers, and other participants in the mental health field.
