Support Group for Parents/Caregivers of Children and Adolescents 
On Tuesday, May 20, at 7:30 pm, a speaker from the St. Luke’s House Career Transition Program for high school students with emotional disabilities will meet with the support group for parents of children and adolescents with mental illness. The group gathers at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda in Room CR 6,7 on the lower level.

Building Bridges for Personal Saftey 
The Regional Community Support Center at Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute is thrilled to announce its second annual conference, Recovery Partnerships: Building Bridges for Personal Safety. Similar to last year, the conference will focus on expanding the opportunities for ongoing inquiry and learning to support the reduction and hoped-for elimination of seclusion and restraint use. Each of the presentations offered will provide information that adds to the continued support of the transformation of our mental health system toward a recovery-oriented system of care focused on consumer empowerment and strong partnerships.

Tools for Helping the Hard to Manage Child. 
Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 7, 2008, when Dr. Georgia DeGangi (of ITS for Children, Kensington, MD)and Dr. Anne Kendall (of Wake & Kendall, Washington, DC) will present an interactive workshop for parents on “Tools for Helping the Hard to Manage Child.” The workshop will focus on practical strategies to help parents to manage anxious, overwhelmed, overstimulated, disruptive and oppositional children at home, at school and in interactions with family members and peers. During the workshop continental breakfast and lunch will be served and there is no registration fee. Drs. DeGangi and Kendall will base the workshop on their new book, “Effective Parenting for the Hard-to-Manage Child: A Skills-Based Book” (Routledge Press, 2007).

General Education Meeting : Learn About the College Living Experience (CLE) 
Betty Bryant of CLE in Rockville will speak about this national post-secondary program for students who need extra support with academic, social and independent living. CLE helps students and parents with college enrollment, registration, tutoring and counseling. Students live together and take classes at local community colleges, vocational schools or universities and receive support from CLE staff (including a clinical psychologist). Bring your high school student with you to this meeting!

General Education Meeting : Dr. José Apud On Schizophrenia 
José A. Apud MD, PhD is psychiatrist with expertise in Neuropsychiatry and Psychopharmacology who presently serves as the Clinical Director for the Schizophrenia Research Program at the National Institute of Mental Health located on the campus at NIH. He will be speaking on the new approaches being developed to treat cognitive impairments in individuals with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. He will also be available to address any questions related to the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia.
