How You Can Help...

There are many ways you can help.

  • Tell a friend! If you tell a friend about NAMI MC and our Everybody Knows Somebody© Campaign you are passing on information that will help someone else find a place to learn more about mental illness and find support.

  • Participate in the campaign...Click on the "Who Do You Know" link above and tell us who you know!
  • Join NAMI! When you join NAMI MC you gain instant access to valuable information and a community of people who understand the daily stuggles of living with mental illness or caring for someone diagnosed with a mental illness.
  • Distribute NAMI Information...We have brochures and resources which can be displayed at work, in public spaces, at doctors offices, etc. Contact us today to learn when you can pick up information to distribute.
  • Listen...When someone you know is diagnosed with or affected by mental illness it is always helpful to listen and be supportive. Really listen and reassure the person that you are there to help them if they would like help.
  • Educate Yourself! Learn all you can about mental illness. Visit your local library, explore the NAMI MC website including the resource section, and learn about resources at your local hospital.
  • Arrange for a FREE Presentation about Mental Illness...NAMI MC Staff members are always available to present information to your club, office, or community program. Call our office today to arrange an "In Our Own Voice" presentation, Parents and Teachers as Allies presentation or other workshop or presentation in English or Spanish.
  • Get Involved! Contact your representatives on the local, state or national level. you can email, write, phone or lobby your representatives. Your congressmen need to know how you feel about issues that affect mental illness including Medicare, Medicaid, S-CHIP, and other ways to access care.
  • Take Simple Steps...Labels contribute to stigma. Terms like "crazy", "schizo" or "psycho" demean and devalue the individual. Labeling people by their illness is damaging. For instance, instead of saying, “He’s a schizophrenic,” say, “He has schizophrenia.”
  • Share...Share the facts about mental illness and about people living with these issues. Speak up if you hear or read something that is untrue.
  • Be Kind...Treat people living with mental illness with respect and dignity, as you would anybody else.
  • Community Development...Support people living with mental illness by helping to develop community resources.
  • Educate Future Generations...Teach children about mental health. Help them see that these illnesses are just like any other illnes and can be treated.
